10 Simple Tips to Lose Weight Healthily Unhealthy eating habit is frequently associated with obesity. Some of the causes leading to obesity are high calorie diet intake and a sedentary lifestyle. Check your body weight at least once a month to know your weight status using the Body Mass Index calculation (BMI).


BMI = Weight (kg) / Height² (m²)

The body mass classifications are defined as follows:
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5 - 24.9: Normal
- 25.0 - 29.9: Overweight
- 30.0 and Above: Obese

Please take note this is a rough guideline only. The proposed ideal weight is classified between from 18.5 to 24.9. The BMI tells you nothing about body composition or fat content. If you are a body builder or very lean muscular individual, you would be classed as overweight by this method. The BMI classification is not suitable for pregnant ladies or children.

  1. Identify how much weight need to be decreased. You're encouraged to lose 10% of your current weight within 6 months.
  2. Safe weight reduction is between ½ kg to 1kg per week. Do not exceed 4kg weight reduction per month.
  3. Drastic weight loss can be harmful.
  4. The safe and effective ways to lose weight are:
    1. Change to healthier lifestyle and better eating habits.
    2. Plan healthy and balanced diet with low calories food. Do check on food pyramid chart for food choices.
    3. Increase physical activities and lessen sedentary lifestyle such as watching TV, computer games or sleep. You can do Turbulence Training in the comfort of your home, exercises suitable for Muslimahs.
  5. Be knowledgeable. Know how much calories you need daily.
  6. Choose low fat and less salty foods. Stay away from taking fried foods and sweet drinks especially carbonated drinks. Change cooking methods from frying to boiling, steaming or roasting.
  7. Consume more high fiber foods such as fruits and vegetables.
  8. Avoid eating late at night. Follow your eating schedule conscientiously.
  9. Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily.
  10. Make physical activities mandatory in your daily schedule.
We must ensure our physical body is healthy so that the soul and spirit is healthy for us to worship Allah. In this sense, proper diet plays a crucial role. Islam permits all pure and clean products, and prohibits certain foods due to their ill effects.

Allah (SWT) says in the Noble Qur'an (Al-Baqarah2:172): O ye who believe! Eat of the good things that We have provided for you, and be grateful to God, if it is Him ye worship.

Finally, as Muslimahs we are encouraged to eat moderately. Overeating has been strongly discouraged in the Qur'an. (Al-A`raf7:31) Eat and drink and be not immoderate. Verily Allah does not like the transgressors.
