| Shopping for an Evening Dress - what to look out for |
|
 | |
 |
Shopping for that special evening dress can be intimidating. Here we try to give you some pointers about what to look out for when buying an evening dress, this should make it easier and less daunting for you.
First consideration: what is the occasion is it formal attire or is it a less formal event like a cocktail reception? The cocktail and evening attire is dressier - think along the lines of the little black dress. In contrast, formal black-tie affairs demand long dresses.
Arguably the most important feature to look out for in your new dress is its style and color, we all know not every dress will work for all body types. Dress to complement your figure, especially the part you think is your 'best asset'.
When choosing your style select a dress that reflects classic, timeless elegance rather than just buying one that's currently trendy. The following are some styles you may want to consider:
Halter Dresses
These are some of the sexiest formal looks around. A halter dress draws attention to the upper half of the body including the face, shoulders and bust line. This is great to draw unwanted attention away from the hips and legs. Several variations exist, including a knot-front halter and a tie-behind-the-neck look; straps vary in size from spaghetti-width to wide, soft straps. With a halter dress there is no need for a necklace. Instead opt for long earrings and pull-up your hair for that glamorous look.
Cocktail dresses
They are the most versatile for special occasion looks. The most common choice in this group is the so called 'little black dress'. Today's fashion also includes jewel-tones as well as bright and rich fabrics. Even rich tapestries do well for a short evening dress. Most cocktail dresses serve as a 'clean slate' for you to accessorize, so go ahead and play around with pearls, precious stones, gold and silver. If you want to hide wide hips choose a dress that is strapless or has cap sleeves, a fitted waist and a knee-length skirt. In general an all-over trim fit is great on most body types as long as the fit isn't too tight to pull anywhere.
Jacket dresses
In case you prefer more coverage and don't want to deal with a wrap, the jacket dress is a great alternative. A well matching dress and jacket is the perfect look for a mother of the bride, for anniversary parties and for wedding guests. Shorter jackets or bolero jackets pair nicely with long gowns. You should choose shiny and elegant fabrics, not ones that look stiff or heavy - this will ensure that the overall look is beautiful.
Corset dresses
The corset dress will lift your breasts and shape your waist; it will give an instant upper body lift. You will look fantastic and edgy while wearing it. Options are to choose a dress with a built-in corset for the bodice or to opt for a separate corset top to be worn with a skirt. This look adds curves to slender figures and structure to fuller figures.
